How a Normal Spring Feels in Every State

Methodology

To determine how a normal season feels in every state, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data on average temperature in April 2022 and historical climate normals for April from the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration..

Average statewide temperature in April 2022 was calculated for the period April 1 to April 17, 2022, using daily summaries data across all weather stations within a state in the Global Historical Climatology Network. Data on normal historical temperature for April was calculated for the period April 1 to April 17 using data on daily U.S. 1991-2020 climate normals for all weather stations within a state in the Global Historical Climatology Network. Only stations with congruent daily data for both the 2022 daily summaries and the historical 1991-2020 climate normals were included in the average temperature calculations.

Data used to determine the warmest and coolest Aprils on record is from monthly summary data from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network Monthly Version 2.5.0 and considers the full month of April. Statewide temperature means were averaged across all weather stations with available data within a state. USHCN data is only available for weather stations within the contiguous United States.
